Biomass Feedstocks

Biomass is a renewable organic material, such as wood, agricultural crops or wastes, and municipal solid wastes, especially when used as a source of fuel or energy. Biomass can be burned directly or processed into biofuels such as ethanol, wood pellets, or methane gas.

Biofuels and energy produced from biomass are neutral with respect to emission of carbon dioxide since the CO2 given off via burning is balanced by the CO2 absorbed by the plants that are grown to produce them.

There are broad categories of biomass eligible for sale and trade which can be used as a source of clean energy, including agricultural wastes and crops, plants and trees, algae, wood waste and residues, animal waste and by-products (including fats, oils, greases and manures), construction waste, and food and yard waste.
